History

Venice of America was founded by tobacco millionaire Abbot Kinney in 1905 as a beach resort town, 14 miles west of Los Angeles. He and his partner Francis Ryan had bought two miles of ocean front property south of Santa Monica in 1891. They built a resort town called Ocean Park on the north end of the property, which was soon annexed to Santa Monica. More info...

Along the Ocean Front Walk, also called the Venice Boardwalk, jugglers and acrobats, tarot readers and Mad Hatter headwear vendors, jug-band musicians and political types circulating petitions to decriminalize marijuana all compete frantically for your attention.
